The Company

OUR MISSION

Centaur Theatre Company is a non profit organization dedicated to creating, developing, producing and presenting an array of plays. Through our plays and other theatrical explorations from the local, national and international scene, it is our mission to inspire ardour and relevance that relates directly to the modern human experience. We are guided in our efforts by a philosophy of staying current. It is our goal to remain up to date in the class of innovative world theatre, while simultaneously presenting a dynamic mix of theatrical form and content drawn from the classical, modern and cutting edge vein.

It is also our mission to participate and foster the spirit of theatrical collaboration with the International, National and Quebecois theatre community at large – with an emphasis on Montreal. We adhere to a mandate of presenting the plays of Montreal playwrights, in addition to other Canadian writers.

Our additional goal is to implement and employ outreach initiatives and programs that will assist in the development of Montreal theatre artists and audiences alike. We are equally driven to maintain a clear community, while affirming our national and international identity. We will carry out all of our aforementioned objectives through the conscientious management of our business affairs.

OUR PROGRAMMING

From classic to contemporary, Centaur Theatre Company produces theatre for our times. We present theatre that reflects the ever changing world around us and theatre which celebrates the vibrant voice of today’s Montreal.

In recent years, Centaur Theatre Company has been a pioneer in producing and presenting 19 world premieres of Montreal playwrights. Centaur has also been recognized as a major player in Canadian theatre through its international collaboration initiatives with Ireland, the Unites States, and Australia and has received numerous major awards for outstanding direction, production, acting, artistic direction, and development of new theatrical talent.

Centaur Theatre Company continues to lead the way in theatrical outreach efforts in the Montreal community. Centaur is also the creator and presenter of the popular Saturday Morning Children’s Series for both the young and the young at heart. Another theatrical celebration at the crux of the Centaur season is the edgy Wildside Festival, which showcases seven independent theatre companies in its annual repertory festival, and includes Centaur’s selection of the best English- language production of the Montreal Fringe Festival.

Nationally and locally, Centaur is now recognized as the leader in the presentation of Quebec French - language plays in translation. Similarly, Centaur has become the home for the English language productions of renowned Quebecois playwright, Michel Tremblay’s works.

In an ongoing dedication to community cooperation, Centaur donates theatrical goods and services to Theatre Companies in Montreal including: The Segal Centre, Infinititheatre, Geordie Productions, Imago Theatre, Theatre Lac Brome, Village Theatre West and Repercussion Theatre. Theatre lovers from all corners of the city, of all ages, and from every cultural and linguistic community are bolstering our artistic community - We welcome you to the Centaur Theatre Company’s 42nd Season!!!
