Words become songs, music becomes
pictures and pain transforms into beauty
A spellbinding performance steeped in the seductive and evocative music of songwriting legend Leonard Cohen. An international sensation! Combining theatre, dance, visual arts and live music, this ground-breaking work explores the architecture of the body and abandons itself to the irresistible sensuality, longing and melancholy that define the lyrics and music of Dance Me to the End of Love and other songs by Leonard Cohen. Created by the world renowned Granhøj Dans company in Aarhus, Denmark, the production has been lauded by international critics for its brilliant imagination and broad appeal. Founded by Artistic Director and Choreographer Palle Granhøj, the thirteen member company has toured extensively around the world.

ABOUT Granhøj Dans
Connecting Love and Sorrow
Denmark, one of Europe's smallest countries, has several dance theatres. We have the Royal Danish Ballet presenting classical ballet, Danish Dance Theatre - a national ensemble for contemporary dance - and several other companies. And above all, we have Granhøj Dans - a worldwide touring company which always surprises its audience.
No wonder. Granhøj Dans, founded in 1989 by artistic director and choreographer Palle Granhøj and visual designer Per Victor, creates theatrical dance performances with experimental, playful expressions and content substance.
Granhøj Dans has from the very beginning based its works on the so-called obstruction technique. It is a technique which, through varied and increasing physical obstacles executed on the dancer's movements, lets the audience see the personality of the performer through the aesthetic expressions. You never know what the next step is in a Granhøj Dans performance. You'll instinctively laugh and tears will flow. This has marked all previous performances, and it is surely so in Dance Me to the End On/Off Love.
You may call Dance Me to the End On/Off Love an autobiographical performance. The choreographer, Palle Granhøj, looks back on his life which is closely linked to his artistic works. But you can also call the performance a tribute to Leonard Cohen and the gripping and breathtaking wisdom of his songs and music. A kind of new interpretation of the Montreal musician-poet's universe. With originality, fascinating musicality, cheerful simplicity, impish humour, 'crispy' madness and ardent quivering, Palle Granhøj adds new dimensions to the unique and profound universe of Cohen.
Challenging all the senses of the audience, the performance exposes the paradox-filled aspects of human existence crystallized through the inextricable connection between sorrow and love. With only their feet visible, two female dancers interpret Cohen's poetry while brilliantly balancing on mannequin heads. Located in a tiny box with a burning candle a naked woman communicates another Cohen song. Tight-fastened rubber bands blow suspenseful from a living face as if giving birth. Seven men are playing guitar as if they are going to die. Palle Granhøj himself draws with arms and body lines of grief in the air referring to the late and loved dancer Søren Sundby. Dance Me to the End On/Off Love pushes the limits of modern dance with surprise and poetry.
