Agents are asked to please only submit candidates who are available throughout the production period and complete run of the play and to please respect the submission deadline date.

 

We are open to actors of all ethnicities, shapes and sizes. It is important that the ages of the characters be respected.

  • Artistic & Executive Director

    Montreal’s Centaur Theatre Company, the flagship English language theatre company in Quebec, invites application for the position of Artistic and Executive Director. Applicants should have a significant experience in a strategic artistic leadership and management role. The new appointment would be in position for the 2017/2018 season.

    Job Description

     

    Chief Officer of the Company, appointed by and responsible to the Board of Directors. Salary and terms negotiated with the Board.

     

    Will organize, maintain and run the Company on lines consistent with the mission statement and resolutions of the Board. Will appoint all senior staff and supervise the organization of their respective departments.

     

    Will submit a seasonal budget to the Board for approval and oversee the running of the Season on terms consistent with that budget, making adjustments throughout the season as necessary.

     

    Specific responsibilities:

     

    Artistic:

     

    1. Choose a season of plays and the artistic team for the presentation of these plays.  Oversee the mounting and run of the plays. Review and respond to script submissions and production proposals, including co-production, the curation of The Wildside Festival and Brave New Looks.
    2. Execute the long and short term conditions necessary for the development and production of new writing e.g. commissions; playwrights-in-residence; workshops; reading of new plays, partnerships; etc.
    3. Maintain and develop a familiarity and healthy relationship with Montreal’s artistic community.
    4. Maintain and develop the character of Centaur as Quebec’s major English-language Regional Company:  this will require involvement with the wider community in many ways; maintain its respect; and provide it with theatre of the highest possible artistic standard.
    5. Be the face of the Company and maintain and develop the proper image of the organization in all its manifestations: to the public; to the theatregoers; to its corporate supporter; government; etc.

     

    Administrative:

     

    1. Appoint the General Manager with the co-operation of the Board, and negotiate the terms of employment.  The General Manager will report to the Artistic and Executive Director and with him/her, oversee all other staff appointments.
    2. Be responsible for the full and proper financial running of the organization and its budget.
    3. Maintain relationships with all levels of government and be involved in all aspects of public funding. Write grant application materials outlining the goals and activities of the company adhering to each grant and its specific requirements.
    4. Be a signing authority for the company.
    5. Be involved, as necessary, in all fundraising decisions and activities. Approve visuals of direct mail pieces, and Gala programs. Create and direct the entertainment portion of the Gala and be an active member of the Gala Committee..
    6. Understand and be involved where necessary in the public relations work of the organization. Approve visuals for brochures, programs, posters, the website and social media.
    7. Be responsible for insuring the building has a welcoming ambience and the building asset is being maintained.
    8. Oversee as necessary the contractual relations with all its employees.
    9. Work with the trade organizations and unions that affect Centaur’s proper functioning, e.g. Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT), Canadian Actors’ Equity Association, APASQ, etc.

     

    Relationship with the Board:

     

    1. Work openly and fully with the Board; respecting its opinions and directives; and put in place the administrative structures to support its functioning.
    2. With senior staff, submit reports to the Board as and when required for the proper working of the Board.
    3. Communicate the artistic direction to the Board and work to harmonize that artistic direction with the Board.

     

  • Script Submissions

    We accept submissions from Canadian writers.

    Please mail a one page script description including:

    -Your name and contact information.

    -A brief synopsis of your play.

    -A cast breakdown (how many in cast, men/women, any doubling).

    -A description of your play's previous development/workshop/production history.

     

    Please include the first ten pages of your play (not the whole document).

    We receive many script submissions every year and it often takes us several months to read them. We are not able to provide dramatical feedback.
